Shaun Phelan has been in the top echelon of New Zealand jumping riders for a number of years, winning very major steeplechase and hurdle currently run in New Zealand. The young Waikato horseman is also a familiar name in the training ranks, training in partnership with father Craig and enjoying many successes along the ride.
We asked our Premiership Leading Jumps Jockey a bit about himself, a few of his favorite things and his goals for next season!
1. What was the first career you dreamed of having as a child?
A. A jockey!
2. What is your earliest racing memory?
A. Going to the races with Dad (trainer Craig Phelan) and watching his horse 'Hitro'.
3. If you could ride any horse, living or dead, which horse would you choose?
A. The Cossack (and what a successful partnership these two have had!).
4. What is one thing you will never do again?
A. Pour petrol on a bonfire!
5. If you could invite three people to dinner, living or dead, who would you invite?
A. Laurie Laxon, Charlie Sheen, Tiger Woods.
6. What would be your first purchase if you won lotto?
A. A Hong Kong owned colt we currently have in training for hopefully a New Zealand campaign. He's by Darci Brahma out of Strictly Maternal.
7. What is your proudest moment in racing?
A. Winning the Great Northern for Mrs Browne over the Ellerslie Hill aboard Tom's Myth.
8. What is the best piece of advice someone has given you?
A. The harder you work, the luckier you'll get!
9. Which is your favourite racecourse to ride over in New Zealand?
A. Christchurch - it is a great jumps track!
10. What would you like to achieve this coming racing season?
A. To win the Australian Grand National.
