Following his heroics in last month’s Grand National Steeplechase (5600m) at Riccarton, Lord Spencer will return to the flat at New Plymouth on Saturday in the NZB Airfreight Road To Jericho (3210m).
Race favourite Lord Spencer left it late but managed to rally and out-finish gallant pacemaker Brucie to take out the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge 151st Grand National Steeplechase (5600m) at Riccarton.
“Barrier one, I thought I was going to be further back than I was, but he travelled so well. He’s a real horse this time around, he’s going to win some big races.”
Lord Spencer has sealed his berth across the Cook Strait next month to compete at Riccarton’s Grand National Festival of Racing following his gutsy win in the Farmlands Pahiatua Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase (4800m) at Woodville on Sunday.
Lord Spencer didn’t let the inclement weather rain on his parade at Te Aroha on Sunday, with the exciting jumper running out a dominant victor in the W L Robinson Livestock Steeplechase (3500m).
Lord Spencer has seen a fair bit of the North Island this week and trainer JJ Rayner is hoping it culminates with a maiden steeplechase victory at Te Aroha on Monday.
