“I’m always happy to jump on Kevin’s, we’ve had such a good partnership over the years and you can always say you don’t want to ride anymore, but there’s no bigger thrill than riding a winner.”
Winning New Zealand’s apprentice jockeys’ premiership wasn’t at the top of Lily Sutherland’s mind at the start of the 2023/24 season, but on Wednesday she welcomed the title she had worked so hard for.
Apprentice rider Lily Sutherland followed her pre-race instructions perfectly to land rugged four-year-old Opawa Jack an impressive winner of the Open 1600m event on the card at Otaki on Saturday.
“He’s come back really well, he was ready to go so it was just a matter of settling in which he’s done really well. He’s a good eater and nothing seems to worry him."
Apprentice jockey Lily Sutherland brought up the 100th win of her career with a well-timed finish aboard Aljay in Saturday’s Beard Brothers Handicap (2200m) at Hastings.
