The connections of short-priced favourite Legarto are in for a massive payday following Saturday’s $450,000 Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie, irrespective of the result.
A trip to Melbourne last year not only gave Ken and Bev Kelso their biggest moment in racing, courtesy of Legarto’s victory in the Gr.1 Australian Guineas (1600m), but also a filly that could prove to be just as exciting.
“It was good for her to come here today and have a look around Ellerslie. She’s still on her way up, and this will clean her up nicely. I think she’ll be peaking at the right time.”
New Zealand has held a strong influence on the A$10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) since it was added to Sydney’s spring itinerary four years ago, and top-class Matamata mare Legarto has the opportunity to add to that record at Rosehill on Saturday.
